Absolutely.” Few businesses face the existential threat of climate change more directly than the global ski industry. In the US alone, about a third of ski resorts are expected to lose more than half their season by 2050, according to a 2017 study by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Colorado. For all their sweeping vistas and pristine powder, ski resorts also have a sizable carbon footprint. In addition to the fuel burned getting guests on location, significant electricity and water are needed to make synthetic snow, an increasingly critical way to stretch the margins of the ski season or supplement the slopes after a warm spell. Last year, Alterra’s operations generated 368 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, roughly enough to power 72,000 homes or drive 82,000 cars for a year. The company plans to trim that tally with a patchwork of solutions, many of them resort-level adjustments such as implementing composting, switching to electric vehicles and installing LED lights and smart thermostats. At its Winter Park Resort in Colorado, for example, Alterra installed a small wind turbine that generates just enough electricity to power a warming hut at the top of the ski lift. At its helicopter ski resort in British Columbia, the company added hydroelectric generators small enough to be placed in mountain streams. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach,” says Darcie Renn, Alterra’s vice president of sustainability. The company is also hoping that its investments in renewable energy and more efficient snowmaking machines will outweigh any increased demand for fake powder. At Alterra’s Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia, for example, new snow guns make roughly twice as much snow as the units they replaced, while using about one third as much energy. Alterra’s impact report is relatively late in coming. Vail Resorts Inc., which owns 41 ski resorts around the world, established its climate plan six years ago, including a pledge to cut or offset its emissions from operations by 2030. As of last year, Vail said it was more than halfway to that goal, in part because the company has bought or built enough renewable energy to cover almost all power use at its North American resorts. Ski industry climate pledges, however, still don’t account for the carbon footprint of guest travel — known as Scope 3 emissions. Daniel Scott, a climate scientist at the University of Waterloo, says that for a tourism business, such emissions are often more than 100 times greater than those from direct and indirect carbon sources Scopes 1 and 2. “They’re touting these Scope 1 and 2 targets, but part of their business strategy is the season pass that completely enables a massive Scope 3, which they conveniently don’t look at,” Scott says. “That, to me, is a massive disconnect.” Alterra’s plan doesn’t ignore Scope 3 emissions entirely; it factors in some employee commuting, for example, and business travel. But it does not measure carbon from the cars and planes dumping skiers on its slopes. This trip to Tokyo - we didn’t have much time to go skiing and decided to make a day trip to Fujiten. This place is great for playing in snow and skiing especially for beginners. There are several ski lifts and beginners runs. Saw lots of students learning how to ski. Good place to come if you feel like skiing and some snow fun and the drive is not too far from Tokyo. There is a cafe next to the ski rental and another one upstairs. On a clear day - you can see Mount Fuji in the background and that makes a lovely view. Most visitors rented skis and snowboards; but fortunately, the resort also offers a Ski Lift service for non-skiers like my family to still allow us to make the most out of our time be honest, we were struggling a bit to walk through the ice; given that we were a pretty clumsy family and compounded by the fact that the sun was glaringly bright at that took us a while to locate the ski lift primarily because there were only a handful of visitors who opted for this activity; but the effort was worth it. The lift afforded you great views of Mt. Fuji and the resort. They'll let you alight once you have ascended to the peak as it gives you access to a small photo op area which gives you an unobstructed view of the peak of Mt. It is a tad inconvenient to get to as even with your Japan Rail Pass you can only get to Otsuki station then pay around £7 to get to Kawaguchiko station before taking a taxi for £35 one way to get to the resort and then hire bikes ranging from £60 hardtail to £150 full sus for the whole day including helmet and unlimited lift rides to the top. They have a canteen with ramen and a couple of other dishes you can get for around £7 each but bring cash or else you are stuck without food! You can also get lockers for your stuff but they were an extra £ once you get past that, the trails are super fun but not suitable for anyone who is still nervous as they don't have any flat segments, it is just all downhill so you do pick up some speed. For the very brave they have black trails with plenty of hardcore jumps as well! Overall a nice day out if you are committed to going for a ride. It is notable as one of only two ski resorts found on Mount Fuji the other is Fujiten and because it is one of the first snow resorts in Japan to open each season around mid to late October with man-made snow. The resort has three lifts two of which run parallel to each other and four runs. Its two main runs are each about 1000 meters long and well suited to beginner skiers and snowboarders. The shorter 500 meter secondary runs are steeper and narrower and closed during night skiing. The resort also has a small terrain park with jumps and rails, and a separate snow play area for kids, sledding and beginner skiers.
